“The use of the close-up magic analogy allowed me to frame the kind of viewership that I saw the artists included in Photography Is Magic as creating. At the heart of this is my aligning of the way in which the practice of close-up magic is undertaken by focusing on the perspective of the viewer. A magician uses a three-faceted mirror for their practice—seeing from the audience’s vantage point—and that has some parity to the way in which these artists take into consideration our perspective and participation in our image environment and build that into the experience of their artworks.” Charlotte Cotton in conversation with Natalie Hegert • ArtSlant
